Does the Book of Mormon Contradict the Bible?

Someone, I (@gather_in_podcast) have been chatting with on Threads recently, asked me to read this article,  ContradictionsBetween the Book of Mormon and the Bible | Institute for ReligiousResearch (irr.org)  and "let the Holy Spirit work". You will notice that firstly, the title of the article gives away the authors conclusion. I have re-titled it as a question. Jared Halverson (BYU, Unshaken Saints) has suggested a formula for examining information critical to our beliefs as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is the Three S formula - Selective, Superficial, and Sensational. Most critical writing (or videos etc.) exhibit most, but not necessarily all, of these elements. So, let me just look at the first point made in this article. 1. The Book of Mormon teaches that little children are not capable of sin because they do not have a sinful nature (Moroni 8:8). In contrast, the Bible in Psalm 51:5 clearly teaches that we have sinful nature f

Post Mission report No 3 - Life in Lara - up to 17 Dec 2023

Two weeks have flown by since my last entry. Maybe this little video sums up how I've been feeling. I feel overwhelmed with physical things and underwhelmed spiritually. Painting, painting, painting. This week will be mowing, mowing, mowing as well as painting, painting, painting. Then a short reprieve for Christmas before commencing more work at Anglesea. One little highlight was getting our nativity scene up for Christmas and just survived the gale force winds we had last week. I've been kiting a bit with Andre at North Shore in Geelong. Went to Melbourne on Thursday and bought a new foil board from Ian Mills. Tried it out at Torquay very briefly on Friday afternoon, before going to the Stonker Christmas/Start of Summer party. Went to watch Jiah play basketball yesterday afternoon, then had lunch with Sue Fenner-Smith afterwards. Nice day! Church was good today, 17 December 2023. My old mate Nick Grbin spoke, as well as my other old mate David Cowan. Both great talks.

Post-mission Report No 1.

Well, we've been home 6 weeks now. If you go to my Mission Report Blog, you will see our report about the drive home which took about 2 weeks. We were officially released from our mission by our Stake President Taula, a couple of nights after returning home, but it honestly wasn't until we had given our home-coming talks that really felt like it was "done". The first Sunday in Geelong for us was General Conference video weekend. We didn't attend - we just watched it online. We had already seen about 80% of it before the weekend anyway. The second Sunday here in Geelong we had some Japanese friends from Cairns come with us to Church, which we very much enjoyed, and we all felt very welcome. Lots of hugs etc. Then the next Sunday, Miriam and Taylor came over to see us, and they came to Church with us, of course. Then the next Sunday our young friend C_____, who lives here in Geelong, came to Church with us, which again was very enjoyable. Last Sunday 12th November

Post mission report No 2

Friday 24 November 2023 The past week we have been on the road again. The floors at Archimedes Ave are being sanded and refinished, so we can’t be there while all that work is being done. We moved everything from the rest of the house in to our bedroom so the floors in all the other rooms can be worked on, and then when we move everything back in to the house from the shipping container, and out of our bedroom, we can get the floors done in our bedroom, so that they match the rest of our house. So, last Monday and Tuesday nights we stayed with Miriam and Taylor at The Gurdies, the we stayed Wednesday night with Stephanie Woodford back in Geelong, and last night and tonight we are staying with Josie Whalebone at her new house in Bacchus Marsh. Today we had lunch with Ros Richardson, and old friend of Margot’s whom she served with as a Stake Missionary way back in Normanhurst Ward when they were both young and single. We had a nice lunch and a good chat. Ros’s husband, Craig, passed awa

Cliff Slade - my talk for Cliff at his funeral - Clifford Elliot Slade 20th November 1952 - 3rd December 2021

I think I might preface my remarks about Cliff today by briefly relating what has transpired over the last few months. Some of you might have heard Cliff refer to me as Muzz, and we did a lot of things together. Late June we got bad backs together. We both had MRI’s we both had cortisone shots, and physio treatment, and I started to get better, but Cliff seemed to be taking longer to get better. In fact, he seemed to be getting worse. He was really struggling with the pain. It didn’t matter what he did, he was in pain. He was around our place one day and he sat down trying the special back support I had bought which I thought was fantastic. It didn’t ease his pain. I had also been given an inversion table, and that was really helping me. Cliff wanted to try that too. He got on it and laid back a little bit and it seemed to increase his pain. He wanted to lay back further thinking he might help, but I talked him out of that. Margot and I went out to visit Cliff and Sandy one day and S

The Last 2 Years

The title of this post is just a little play on words. The Best Two Years is a 2003 film, popular among the Latter-day Saint audience, portraying the lives of a few young missionaries, serving  in the Church's not quite obligatory 2 year mission program. For the last 2 years, Margot and I have been trying to go on a mission for the Church ourselves. We've been called, but we've not quite made it in to the mission field yet. About 2 years ago, following Stake Conference, Margot and I were invited in to the Stake Presidents office to meet with the Stake President and the visiting Area Authority Seventy, whose name slips my mind. I'm fairly sure he is Tongan and he served as a Mission President somewhere in Africa. I had been keen to serve a Senior Couple mission for a few years. The time was never quite right, and it's fair to say that I was much keener than Margot. Our daughter Miriam served in the Sydney North Mission and I was keen to serve at the same time, but no

Father of the Bride Speech for Miriam

Miriam and Taylor were finally able to get married in the Melbourne Temple on Saturday 31st August 2021 after two previously cancelled dates, due to Covid 19 related lockdowns. Orginally they had planned to have about 88 people at the wedding but under the restrictions they were only allowed to have 50 there. We only had nine days between lockdowns in which they could get married! So, what comes below is fairly close to my Father of the Bride Speech - On behalf of the entire Ceff family (all 7 of us!), I'd like to welcome you all here today and thank you for coming. Being in the "top 50" you can feel pretty good about yourselves! You're in Mim and Taylors top 50 most important people in their lives. I'd like to thank Morry and Joelle and family for the preparation of the venue today and also like very much to thank the venue owners here for getting ready for us all on such short notice. Apparently it's the shortest time they've ever had to get ready for a
